Eyebright is a wild plant originating from Europe. Long used as herbal medicine, it’s typically considered a natural remedy for eye problems. The legend says that it has gotten the name after Greece Charites Euphrasyne (one of three Zeus daughters), whose name means “Joy”. People believed that the plant brings joy to everyone, since it heals eyes.
Eyebright is a plant that is traditionally used in folk medicine for treating eye disorders. Eyebright contains compounds called tannins, which appear to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Eyebright also has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-oxidant and astringent properties.
Eyebright also contains vitamins A, B vitamins (thiamine and riboflavin), C, and E, which all have eye-nourishing properties. Zinc, selenium, and copper are also found in eyebright and help contribute to healthy retinas and lenses.
It also contains chemical compounds like: lutheoline and quercetin which have antihistaminic properties, and are therefore good for treating allergic reactions, and also iridoids like aucubin which has a strong anti-oxidative effect, and thus protects the eyes exposed to harmful external factors like UV radiation which causes oxidative stress.
Eyebright is commonly used to treat eye conditions such as conjunctivitis and eyestrain.
It can be used internally – like a tea, and externally – like compresses for eyes, and also included in eye drops.
OCUflash can be considered as eyebright eye drops, since eyebright is the main active ingredient, which gives the product its antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties so it can be used in cases of non-inflammatory infections, and also as a natural remedy for eye allergies, since eyebright also has astringent properties.
